Milestone Monday

Juliana really laughed (more than just a little “heh heh” chuckle) for the first time today. OK, so it wasn’t for the first time… but it was the first time I got to hear it so we’ll just pretend it was the first. No one can make Juliana crack up in smiles and now giggles like her Daddy. I can’t believe a three month old can be as much of a Daddy’s girl as she is.

Juliana also rolled back to tummy for the first time today. She’s been working at it for awhile. She would be laying on her back and see a toy or something she wanted off to her side and she’d roll *almost* over to her tummy to reach it and then roll back to her back. Today she finally made it all the way to her tummy.

Gabriella’s accomplishment of the day was learning to spell “Cat,” “Hat” and “Sat” with her fridge magnets. Gabriella is bound and determined to learn to read (her idea, not ours.) She is always asking about letters and words and she picks things up quickly. She knows all the letters (although she still sometimes mixes up Y & V or calls W a U) and she also knows the sounds they make. She is very good at telling what letter a word starts with. We’ve recently been sounding out some three letter words with her. When Jonathan showed her how to make “Cat” and “Sat” with her fridge magnets she immediately swapped out the “S” for an “H” and announced that she had made “hat.” Then she swapped the “H” for a “G” and said she made “Gat.” Gat isn’t a word in her vocabulary, but it really shows that she gets how words are put together.

Hi guys! I finally have a chance to read your blog. First entry and I already have to leave a comment. :-)

I used the book "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" with Benjamin and Nathaniel. They were both very early readers and self-motivated - must be a Whisler thing. :-) Anyway, it also teaches writing but we just did the reading part. The lessons are short and my boys liked it a lot. It's also very inexpensive. I think we got ours at Half Price Books so it was even cheaper.

Anyway, I thought I'd suggest that. You could go through the lessons and when you get to a point where she loses interest or it gets to be too much for her, you can just shelve it until she's ready to move on. Seriously, having early readers made my life - especially with the homeschooling - SO much easier!

Okay, I'm off to read the rest of the blog now.
